A Songs from the Stacks profile of Artemas Carter, an early Antioch trustee and treasurer (from 1859) who personally bankrolled the College’s finances for two decades, lost his own fortune in the Great Chicago Fire and Panic of 1873, and died in near-poverty in Winnetka, Illinois in May 1877 — still giving what little he had left to Antioch.
