[This is the letter that Interim President Matthew Derr wrote to Nancy Crow to
establish the Community and Community Governance Task Force Committee]

As we continue our collective focus on fund raising, accreditation, curriculum, and
facilities improvements in preparation for the return of students to campus in
fourteen months, it is important that we also restore Antioch’s unique and long-
standing practice of community-governance.
With this objective in mind, I have invited emeritus faculty member Al Denman and
alumna Jennifer Berman, ’84 to co-chair and form a Community and Community
Government Taskforce. This taskforce will be comprised primarily of Community
Managers and alumni with experience in Community Government, and governance
beyond Antioch’s campus.
It is my hope that this group will serve for two years and continue to assist the
community with the development of a model of community governance that honors
our values and legacy and acknowledges the creative potential of the community of
Antioch College (students, staff, faculty and administrators) of 2011 and beyond.
The “Three C’s” have each been critical educational components to the
accomplishments of Antioch College alumni across the generations. The relationship
between the program we are now developing and a commitment to community
governance as genuine and practical experience are critical to its eventual success.
I anticipate that the Community Government Taskforce will want to host an open
meeting at the upcoming Alumni Reunion. With the Alumni Board’s support, I hope
that time can be found in the schedule time to discuss this important work.
