In recent days there have been posts from students, alums and community members questioning the ongoing criticisms of Jane. Key among her supporters’ reasons is that she can’t be blamed for all of Antioch’s current ills. And it may seem reasonable to say that one person shouldn’t be blamed for a multitude of problems.
Except, with the 2024 revision of the College’s Bylaws, Jane’s Executive Council (EC) gained complete control of Antioch (See Section 3.1). Its powers are the same as the Board of Trustees (BoT). This is unlike most other colleges and universities where the BoT runs the schools or, where there is an executive council, it has limited powers. Unlike the Antioch BoT, with around 20 members, the Executive Council is Jane and a couple close comrades.
How powerful is the Executive Council? Jane just had her contract extended two years. It was done by the EC. The BoT not only didn’t get a vote on it, they didn’t even see it!
Jane got what she wanted, near dictatorial control of the school. If she’s in charge, then she’s also to blame. It’s really that simple.
