mother’s maiden name. He must be some relation to Chet. Note that Henry
Hornblower married Hattied Frances Wood and had a daughter, Ruth
Hornblower. Ruth Hornblower’s first marriage was to an Atkins and
produced five children. Ruth Hornblower’s second marriage was to Chester
Noyes Greenough and produced no children. One of Ruth’s children was
Henry Hornblower Atkins, who married Karkilie Withington – Chet’s
parents. He was named Chester Greenough, obviously after his father’s
stepfather.

Bond as a candidate for Board of Trustee member. I am very pleased to
provide a summary statement of why she would be a superb member of the
Board. Had I known you wanted this statement, I would have done so much
earlier so as to expedite her consideration. I will not simply repeat her resume.
“I have known Frances for over seven years, and I can highly recommend
her. She has all the basic characteristics for board membership: competence,
caring with unquestionable character, vast experience, good judgment, clear
thinking, serious intellect, desire to serve on the Antioch Board, and a very
impressive drive to make a difference for others.
But I want to emphasize her special aptitudes for the Antioch Board:
1. Academic background: A university board needs depth of membership
from the very field of endeavor which it oversees: education, particularly
higher education. Frances brings a lifetime of experience in both
administration and teaching in the university setting. She knows well the
issues and problems faced by the Board from both perspectives. She
knows the proper division of responsibilities between Board and
administration. She knows and has dealt with the academic, business and
administrative matters of universities. She has “been there” and can
speak eloquently to the problems and solutions that other universities
have tried and with what success or failure. I have heard Barbara speak
of the need for someone with this kind of experience.
2. Coop experience: While working at the Peace Corps, she worked with
me as director of the Peace Corps fellows program. The focus of this
program was to establish programs at various university graduate
schools for Returning Peace Corps volunteers, in which the volunteers
could continue with their formal education, while including a crucial
component of community-based education/experience in the field in
which they were studying, in the community in which the university
was located. It was indeed, a co-op program … in the spirit of the
Antioch co-op program, and Frances loved the idea and promoted it
wholeheartedly. She wants another opportunity to support this concept.
3. Fund-raising. Frances will not bring millions of dollars of personal
wealth to the board table, but she does bring substantial and very
successful experience in securing funds from foundations, as for example
when she secured a multimillion dollar foundation grant for the Peace
Corps Fellows Program. She might well be able to assist the University
in this field of fund-raising.
4. Strategic tmnking: I believe that the ability to think conceptually and
strategically is key to Board membership. Frances brings this kind of
thinking to the Board.
5. Diversity: With the recently announced retirement of a femaile Board
member, my new membership, and the expected approval of two more
new male members of the Board, the Board appears to be able to use
some additional gender diversity, not to mention a strong Italian
heritage.
6. Teamwork with independent tMnking: The best approach to university
issues, in addition to strategic triinking, is the ability to balance working
with the other Board members, while being willing and able to set forth
independent thinking in a cooperative and non-strident, cooperative
manner. Frances has demonstrated that ability over and over to me.
7. Objectivity: Not everyone on the Board needs, or should be, a former
student of one or another Antioch campuses. How refreshing to have a
member of the Board who wants to assist the goals and missions of
Antioch, as does Frances, without an “baggage” or preconceptions, and
with wonderful experience to view our problems/opportunities.
8. Achievements: Her resume speaks to her many achievements in the
university setting, in government – particularly the Peace Corps Fellows
directorship and her position in the office of Secretary Riley, the then-
US Secretary of Education position, and in her own writing and
independent video production work: writing, producing and filming a
whole series of videos on parenting/child education.
9. Dedication and hard work: I can absolutely assure you that Frances
would be an unstinting Board member. Hard work is her stock in trade.
She would read and digest all the material sent to her, and be prepared
at all meetings. She would definitely not be an absentee-board member
… I am sure that you seek workers, not glory seekers, for the Board
seats. Frances will not disappoint you.
10. Time and Desire: At this point in her career, she assures me that she can
and would devote the necessary time to the position. The desire to serve
is based on the excitement of advancing and growing the Antioch
difference.
11.1 hope this is helpful, Lois. There is much more I could say, and may
well say at another time, but it is getting late, and I must close this for

become a Professor in the School of Public Affairs prompted some questions at the
time as to whether he would remain at the University of Maryland at College Park.
