Antioch College was founded in **1850** by the Christian Connection and began operating in **1852**, with education reformer Horace Mann as its first president (

In **2008**, Antioch University closed the college. The university board declared financial exigency in June 2007 and voted to suspend operations after one more year; the closure took effect **July 1, 2008**, with roughly 260 students and 35 faculty members remaining (
College and University Government: Antioch University and the Closing of Antioch College). Alumni and faculty responded by forming the Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute and a governance body called ExCil to sustain the community until the college reopened independently in 2011 (
