The suspended operation of a small college in a small Midwestern village hardly seems newsworthy. However, the news about Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, has generated press coverage around the world. Why?
Sadly, the coverage to date gives inadequate answers. Conservatives gloat that the liberals did themselves in. Liberals lament the caricature of progressive politics that the college had become. Higher education observers cite the drop in student enrollment and the ramshackle appearance of the campus. Alumni name and blame those responsible, including themselves, for their beloved alma mater’s demise.
