YELLOW SPRINGS VILLAGERS TO GATHER AT ANTIOCH COLLEGE’S HISTORIC MAIN BUILDING TO VOICE CONCERN OVER RECENT WATER DAMAGE.

On Saturday, February 7, a resident of Yellow Springs, while walking his dog through the Antioch College campus, noticed water seeping through the bricks of the exterior wall of Main Building. When he looked through a window into what had been the president’s office, he saw water raining down from the ceiling into inches of water below (1). He called the Miami Township Fire and Rescue squad. The main feed to the sprinkler system in the attic had frozen and burst.

With the shuttering of the College, all campus buildings, with the exception of the Library, have been left unheated, despite repeated calls from alumni, villagers and Glenn Harper, the manager of preservation for the Ohio Historical Society, that minimal heat is necessary to safeguard the buildings in the winter.

In June, Harper wrote University officials: “Our office is concerned that without at least minimal measures to mothball and stabilize the historic campus buildings during the period in which they will be closed, significant damage may occur…We strongly suggest that forced air ventilation be provided in the summer and at least minimal heat (45 to 50 degrees) be provided during the winter months.”

The University did not heat the buildings. This is the fourth Antioch building known to have experienced sprinkler system failure this winter. The Union, Theater and South Hall have all suffered serious water damage in recent weeks.

According to Joyce Morrissey, former Health Advocate and Associate Dean of Students at Antioch College, “when there is water infiltration in buildings there is a timeline in which action has to be taken to prevent mold contamination…There is a 48 to 72 hour window to get things cleaned up and dried before mold activity begins.”

After viewing the online video of the water leak at Main Building, Ms. Morrissey contacted William Treasure, CPG, CMRS, and President of Turn Key Environmental Consultants. Mr. Treasure, a Certified Microbial Remediation Supervisor with over thirty years of experience in environmental services, had done all the environmental testing and oversaw the mold remediation work at the college in 2002. After listening to Ms. Morrissey’s description of the damage, Mr. Treasure said that drying the building out immediately is critical. Every hour of delay will cause more damage, he said, and cost more money. There are companies in the area that have equipment to deal with problems of this nature, he said, such as industrial dehumidifiers, dryers, and industrial desiccants. The cheapest and best solution for this type of large scale drying, said Treasure, is an industrial desiccant. The closet company with such equipment is in Indianapolis.

When Ms. Morrissey informed Mr. Treasure that heat was turned off in the building, he gasped, “Oh my god! They have to turn the heat on.”

Sunday afternoon, 24 hours after the water leak was discovered, standing water is visible through the windows. There is still no evidence of a cleanup effort.

The rally will take place at noon, Monday, February 9, 2009, at Antioch College’s Main Building, 795 Livermore Street, in Yellow Springs.

We, the members of the Antioch College Action Network, offer our support and solidarity to the community of the New School. We believe that your struggle and our struggle are intrinsically linked.

The state of higher education

All across the country, in schools large and small, public and private, faculty, staff, and student concerns are being undermined by “business” practices. Tenure, academic freedom, and quality education are being undone by the same mentality that has led to the world’s current economic crisis. Antioch College is precariously suspended. The Institute for Social Ecology has greatly reduced its operations and lost its own campus. New College in San Francisco has already fallen, and the New School in New York is fighting back. Antioch College with the Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute (http://nonstopinstitute.org/) is, too.

Antioch has faced many of the same problems that the New School is currently facing:

Consolidation of power

The board and administration of Antioch University have placed huge amounts of power in a single executive, Chancellor Tulisse Murdock. The chancellor has consistently undermined the college and any attempts to save it. The New School faculty and students have stood up to President Kerrey’s move to become provost as well as president.

Lack of transparency in governance

The administration of Antioch University, corporate owners of Antioch College, operated without checks and balances and in an increasingly secretive fashion. Cut off from the community they nominally served, the administration and board have made increasingly destructive decisions, culminating in the suspension of operations at Antioch College, the rejection of alumni offers to keep the college open, and the destabilizing of Antioch University’s educational mission, and thus to the larger University community that they should serve.

Erosion of tenure

Antioch University has been eroding tenure at its other campuses, and there is strong evidence in board minutes and administrative practices at Antioch University to suggest that the suspension of operations at the college is an attempt to eliminate faculty job security at Antioch University as a whole. Like the New School’s imbalance of 333 full-time (tenured) to 1,733 part-time faculty, a disturbing trend has emerged across higher education.

Community voting “No Confidence”

Like the New School’s “No Confidence” vote in President Bob Kerrey, Chancellor Murdock has faced no fewer than four votes of “No Confidence” from faculty, students, and staff. The Board of Trustees have let warnings from their invested constituents and loyal staff go unheeded and let Murdock remain in power. Let us hope the New School’s Trustees do not do the same.

Faculty losing authority over curriculum

The Antioch University Board and administration imposed a disastrous new curriculum on the faculty of Antioch College, cutting enrollment in half, and precipitating a financial disaster that led to the Board voting to suspend the operations of Antioch College.

We stand in solidarity with the autonomous occupiers of the New School against the rising prices of education, the reduction of education to a business model, the erosion of rights in our workplaces, and for the right to a sound and relevant education and the call for a just and responsible social solution to humanity’s immediate and devastating crisis.

ACAN is an independent collective of autonomous alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends of Antioch College and villagers of Yellow Springs, Ohio. ACAN is a grassroots movement working collaboratively for a continuous and sustainable future for Antioch College. ACAN has no affiliation with Antioch University, the Antioch College Continuation Corporation, the Antioch University Board of Trustees, the Antioch College Alumni Association, or Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute.ACAN is responsible for the content of this statement.

Displaced Antioch College Alumni Camp Out on Historic Campus

Locked Campus Housing Forces Visiting Alumni to Sleep Outside During their Critical Annual Alumni Reunion Week

Yellow Springs, Ohio (June 21, 2008) – Over 450 Antioch College alumni traveled from across the United States to arrive at the pre-Civil War college campus, despite this year’s lack of reunion housing. Although a most recent announcement made by Antioch University officials, that stated that they were again willing to negotiate with alumni to keep Antioch College open, faculty members were locked out of their offices last week and all campus dormitories, which traditionally have housed alumni during the annual reunions, have remained locked and made unavailable to alumni, many traveling from as far as Portland, Oregon, New York, New York, Canada and Florida. In a response to the lack of housing and the continued conflicting actions of the university officials, Antioch College alumni created a “Tent City” on the most highly-used and visible lawn of the Yellow Springs campus, the “Horseshoe”, the lawn connecting Livermore Street to the historic Main Hall.

“We are claiming the most visible space on the campus as a sign that Antioch College is here to stay,” said Rowan Kaiser, Community Co-Manager for the 2008-2009 academic year of Antioch College, representing the voice of Antioch College alumni. “The college community will never stop working to reclaim the campus, the name, the assets, the heritage and the reputation of our Antioch College.”

Visiting Antioch College alumni have been sleeping in tents during the reunion with no access to hot or cold showers. At night, the Antioch campers have the use of portable toilets. “Not having access to basic facilities, like showers, beds and drinkable tap-water will not deter an Antiochian from participating in the movement to keep the college open,” said Chad Johnston, an alum from 2001 who traveled from Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

The Antioch College alumni and entire Antioch College community of faculty, staff and Yellow Springs villagers invite the press to a brief press conference at 5:00 PM EST, on Saturday, June 21, 2008, on the grounds of the, “Tent City”.

We, the undersigned, call for the immediate resignation of Antioch University Chancellor Toni Murdock and Board of Trustees Chair Art Zucker.

For the past year, we have watched the negotiations between Antioch University and alumni groups who are dedicated to the future of Antioch College. It is now apparent that Antioch University never had any intent of negotiating in good faith an agreement that met the criteria which united these groups:

    * sufficient self-governance of Antioch College, and
* the continuation of all necessary operations at Antioch College (including student recruitment).

Recent comments from Chancellor Murdock have clarified the University’s intent in these negotiations- the University needed the assets of the college to support the other university campuses, and the university desired to emerge with enough capital to continue immediately the expansion of Antioch University.

Prior to the Board’s decision to close Antioch College, there was no warning, communication, nor consultation with the campus community and its alumni. This is a violation of the college’s cherished tradition of shared governance, vital to its reputation and thus to its very life.

In the year since the decision, Antioch University administrators and the Chair of the Board of Trustees have continued to malign the college’s shared governance, academic programs, faculty and students, and have misled and misinformed the public and the news media. The actions and statements of the Chancellor, Board Chairman, and other university administrators have damaged the reputation of the Antioch College program and the education received by its students and alumni. These statements have also damaged the reputation of the faculty and staff of the college.

Under the leadership of Chancellor Murdock and Chairman Zucker, Antioch University has continually and intentionally disregarded alumni support in planning the future of Antioch and the college. The Chancellor treated the alumni with the same disdain that she has given the on-campus community. This treatment of the alumni has damaged (if not destroyed) the ability of Antioch University to raise future funds from the college alumni and its official Alumni Association.

Under the leadership of Chancellor Murdock, Antioch University has abandoned its commitment to the Coretta Scott King Center for Cultural & Intellectual Freedom, contrary to statements that it would not do so. In their cavalier and disrespectful treatment of the CSK Center, Chancellor Murdock and Chair Zucker have demonstrated their disdain for Antioch’s values and legacies, and have shown their lack of integrity and honesty.

Chancellor Murdock’s leadership has been questioned at each of her appointments in Antioch University; twice receiving votes of “No Confidence” from two separate faculties of the university, Antioch University Seattle(2000), and Antioch College(2008).

We the undersigned believe that Chancellor Murdock and Chair Zucker have failed in their stewardship and fiduciary obligations to safeguard the future of the College. We are calling for their immediate resignation from their positions, either voluntarily or by action by board members who recognize the failures of the past and the need for change in leadership.

WHEREAS; The Trustees of Antioch University have resolved to negotiate with any party at any time to continue a residential progressive undergraduate liberal arts education in Yellow Springs,

WHEREAS: The Antioch College Continuation Corporation (ACCC) is committed to upholding the mission of Antioch College and is willing to continue operations of the college starting July 1, 2008, with the means, motivation and resources to do so,

WHEREAS: Neither the Antioch College campus nor the alumni community were consulted before the suspension decision was announced, which is a violation of the school’s cherished tradition of shared governance, vital to its reputation and thus to its very life,

WHEREAS: Antioch University has continually and intentionally disregarded alumni support in planning the future of Antioch College,

WHEREAS: Antioch University Chancellor Toni Murdock has striven for closure of Antioch College since the beginning of 2007, and through her actions has actively impeded alumni efforts to save the college,

WHEREAS: Chancellor Murdock has twice received votes of “No Confidence” from two separate faculties of the university, and has no credentials for leadership of an undergraduate, residential liberal arts institution,

WHEREAS: Antioch University has abandoned its commitment to the Coretta Scott King Center, contrary to statements that it would not do so,

WHEREAS: Antioch University administrators and the Chair of the Board of Trustees have continually maligned the college shared governance, academic programs, faculty and students, and have misled and misinformed the public and the news media,

WE RESOLVE THAT:

1. The Antioch University Board of Trustees should demonstrate good faith in negotiating with the Antioch College Continuation Corporation for an open and independent Antioch College, with tenured faculty and unionized staff; and

2. If the Trustees of Antioch University allow its administration to proceed with current plans for the suspension of College operations, we blame them, and them alone for the collapse of the College; to that end, we will refuse to support Antioch University with our money or our labor in perpetuity, and will actively fight their claims of ownership to the campus, endowment, and historic mission of the college; and

3. We will support the Antioch College Faculty and College Revival Fund’s plan for Non-Stop Antioch; and

4. The Chancellor and the Chair of the Board should resign their posts immediately, having failed in their stewardship and fiduciary obligations to safeguard the future of the College,

5. We call on the Trustees of Antioch University to stand with the alumni and the college community in planning for a brighter future for Antioch College. The Trustees of Antioch University are:

Press release:

Antioch College will host a Community Art Festival around the theme “Antioch Is My Home” from April 13 through April 26. “The theme is a sentiment that is echoed across the Antioch community. I wanted to develop a positive project that would create solidarity and build the momentum of the efforts to save Antioch,” says Marjorie Jensen, a recent Antioch College graduate who is coordinating the festival.

This multi-faceted festival will include an exhibition in the Reed Gallery (in the upstairs of the Visual Arts building) that opens on April 13 and runs through April 26; video screenings and musical performances in Kelly Hall on April 17 at 8pm; dance performances in Antioch’s South Gym on April 23 at 8pm; theater performances and readings of various writing styles in the Antioch Area Theater on April 24 at 8pm. There will also be a variety of installation pieces set up around campus throughout the duration of the festival.

Art contributions featured in this festival are from all stakeholders in the Save Antioch Movement: Antioch students, staff, faculty, alumni, Yellow Springs community members, and friends of the college. The “Antioch Is My Home” project has been developed through a process that has involved members from all of these constituencies.

A few examples of the multi-generational submissions include readings by a current Antioch theater student, Zoe Julich, from a play entitled “Choice of Pastry,” written by an alumna, Robin Rice Lichtig. Alumnus Michael Casselli is planning on creating “footprints,” or visual representations, of buildings that he associates with his Antioch home that have been torn down on campus. Colette Palamar, Antioch professor of Ecology and Director of the Herndon Gallery, is lending her painting entitled “Family” to the exhibit.

The submission deadline is April 12. Festival submissions will be documented in a printed publication that includes a CD/DVD. The submissions will also be available online. For more information about the project, visit: http://art.saveantioch.org.

The “Antioch Is My Home” Community Art Festival is supported by the Antioch College Action Network (ACAN). ACAN is an independent collective of autonomous alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends of Antioch College and villagers of Yellow Springs. ACAN is a grassroots movement working collaboratively for a continuous and sustainable future for Antioch College.

Supporters of Antioch College call on Antioch University to negotiate in good faith over the future of the college. The university issued conflicting statements Friday about the state of talks that could keep the historic college open.

Andrzej Bloch, Antioch College Interim President, stated Friday in an open meeting at the college that Antioch University trustees did not hold a vote on the future of Antioch College. However, a university press release the same day stated that Antioch College would not be open at the start of the 2008-2009 academic year.

Initial reports in the media stated negotiations to transfer authority of Antioch College to the recently established Antioch College Continuation Corporation (ACCC) failed. Sources close to the talks indicate that negotiations continue, and the Board of Trustees have expressed a willingness to continue discussions with the ACCC.

Meeting Sunday, members of the coalition of college supporters known as the Antioch College Action Network (ACAN) rejected the University’s statement that the College would suspend operations June 30. ACAN understands that Antioch College will not operate under Antioch University beyond June 30th, but that does not preclude operations under the new corporation ACCC. While hopeful of a positive outcome to the negotiations, ACAN is committed to developing bold, creative initiatives and actions to support continuous operations of the college.

Alumni raised $18 million in cash and pledges to keep the college open, and the nine members of the ACCC have personally pledged $8.5 million. The trustees have thus far balked at the ACCC’s offer to acquire the college.

According to Antioch University’s own press release, the Board of Trustees continues to negotiate a possible transfer of Antioch College to the ACCC. If this transfer is successful, it is possible that Antioch College will begin operations under the new corporation for the 2008-2009 academic year.

If Antioch College is transferred to a new corporation, Antioch University would not be responsible for the decision to resume operations under a new corporation for the 2008-2009 academic year.

ACAN members believe that by publicizing the apparent closure of Antioch College on Friday, February 22nd, Antioch University administrators may not have acted in the previously agreed upon mutual good faith and may have damaged delicate negotiations, demoralizing the college community.

ACAN members are asking the Antioch University administration to publicly address these issues: 1) the inconsistencies between Bloch’s statement and the university’s press release; 2) the source of the statement that Antioch College will not operate in 2008-2009; and 3) the Trustees’ plan for the continuation of the negotiations with the ACCC.

ACAN members also call into question the experience, competence and objectivity of the Feasibility Work Group charged by the trustees with evaluating the ACCC proposal. The Work Group includes members who have demonstrated public hostility to the college, none of whom attended the college, and none of whom has expertise in private residential liberal arts education.

University chancellor Toni Murdock, who serves on the Work Group, was the subject of no confidence votes by the faculty, staff and students of the college, as well as by the faculty of Antioch Seattle, where she previously served as president.

ACAN is an independent collective of autonomous alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends of Antioch College and villagers of Yellow Springs. ACAN is a grassroots movement working collaboratively for a continuous and sustainable future for Antioch College. ACAN has no affiliation with Antioch University, the Antioch College Continuation Corporation, the Antioch University Board of Trustees, or the Antioch College Alumni Association. ACAN is responsible for the content of this statement. For more information about ACAN visit http://saveantioch.org/

This winter break marks a critical turning point in the movement for Non-Stop Antioch. The College Revival Fund has delivered its first $2 million payment to the university to maintain continuous operations of the college, with another $4.6 million promised by December 15, and admissions is open for new transfer students.

We must sustain our momentum and keep pushing to establish autonomy for the college, lift financial exigency, restore tenure, recruit first-year students, and continue full, uninterrupted academic programs and support services.

We must be especially vigilant during the winter break to assure that our campus, its property and community, are kept safe.

We know that current students face the difficult choice of whether to leave in the face of such uncertainty and ambiguity. We are calling to you to stay with us and to fight, as we are with you. We will do everything we can to support those of you who decide to stay. We’ll join you in the struggle to improve conditions on campus and hold leadership accountable.

We encourage students to get together with alumni in your hometowns over the break. We should all get to know each other better, and work together to defend Antioch and recruit new students. Check forum.antiochians.org for your local chapter information.

We will be stepping up activities in the coming weeks as we gather support and build our agenda. Over 100 individuals have already signed on to our Call to Action first published in the Record last week. We invite all community members; students, faculty, staff, alumni, villagers, friends to join us. Sign your support at http://acan.antiochians.org.

~The Antioch College Action Network

The Antioch College Action Network (ACAN) is a coalition of Antioch College Community Members: students, faculty, staff, alumni, villagers and friends, dedicated to a vibrant, humane, self-governing and self-sustaining Antioch College.

Operating on principles of direct participatory democracy, ACAN continues to work towards a true Non-Stop Antioch, uncompromised in its academic integrity and commitment to personal responsibility and social justice.

In these endeavors, ACAN advocates autonomy, independence, and shared community governance; meaning self-representative and thus open, public and mutually accountable democratic decision-making processes, faculty tenure, common respect for all community members particularly students and employees, sustainable student services, aggressive admissions, and faculty-driven curriculum for Antioch College.

To truly reverse its closure, Antioch College needs to begin acting like it’s open, and begin building on its vibrant academic foundation to grow into a healthy, self-sufficient institution.

To make this happen, Antioch must immediately:

establish the College Advisory Board and invest it with real authority, including hiring a College President

remove internal barriers and begin recruiting and admitting new and transfer students for Fall 2008

restore tenure and remove the threat of firing that hangs over faculty and staff

maintain all academic and support services during renovations

hold leadership accountable for past decisions and statements

ensure an open and participatory decision making process

guarantee a commitment from leadership to operate on principles of openness and honesty

have leaders committed to the turnaround of Antioch College

call for respect in communications from all university officials so the College’s already challenging task isn’t made more difficult

Sincerely,

WE HAVE YOUR BACK

A Message from Supporters of Community Governance

For every generation of Antiochians there comes a defining moment – a moment to stand up for our shared values and to use our strength in the service of our vision.

This time is now. We want the Antioch College Community to know that we, who have engaged in Community Governance, have your back at this critical time. We acknowledge the difficulty of doing so while not being there with you, but wish to make our intentions clear.

As the campus Antioch Community, you are showing the world the value of an Antioch education. You are taking action to enable people you may never know, people you may never meet, to access an Antioch education and go on to win victories for humanity.

One alum, Edith Bagley, sister to the late Coretta Scott King said that “Antioch has to live. It gives hope to the world.” You give others such hope with your presence, your thoughts and your actions.

You are taking a risk. And we are here to offer assistance.

The risk is worth it because Antioch is worth saving. Today’s Antioch education in classroom, co-op, and community is as valuable and true to the Antiochian ideals of egalitarianism and community responsibility as any since 1852.

The undersigned of this letter are educators, organizers, artists and activists who are leaders in our chosen professions and communities. We have fought for social justice wherever we have gone and now we are fighting for justice for the students, faculty and staff of Antioch College.

We ask you to not give in. We ask you to not give up and we ask you continue to fight.
We ask the same of ourselves.

DECLARATIONS

What We Want, What We Believe

The Students are the Reason for The School

We are committed to do everything in our power to maintain an environment at Antioch College that makes it possible for current students to stay enrolled with confidence, and for new students to enroll. The students must be recognized and respected throughout the process of revitalizing the College.

No Tenure, No Peace
Retaining the faculty is necessary to support a vibrant academic community and to provide the course offerings that current students need to graduate. Faculty retention is essential to student retention. We oppose all faculty cuts, and we oppose any imposition of curricular changes on the faculty. The college must trust the faculty to determine the curriculum, and must rebuild an atmosphere in which the faculty are appropriately respected and valued. This is necessary to retain current faculty, and to attract new faculty as the college grows.

Stop Firing, Start Hiring
We oppose further cuts to staff and student services and any attempts to undermine the unions. Antioch College cannot shrink further without sacrificing the basic functions of the campus and leaving students without the support that they need to thrive. The college must focus on revenue growth rather than expense reduction, and where cuts are absolutely needed, non-human resources should be considered more expendable than human beings.

Exigency is Academic Martial Law
We call for an immediate explanation of the specific conditions under which financial exigency will be lifted and the threat of suspended operations will cease to be held over Antioch College. We call for a justification for maintaining financial exigency, besides the apparent function of allowing the university to violate tenure and other contractual obligations. If such justification cannot be satisfactorily provided, we call for an immediate lifting of the state of financial exigency.

Tear Down the Obstacles to Recruitment
The admissions department must be promptly restaffed and ready to begin an aggressive outreach and recruitment program for new, returning and transfer students, as soon as permitted by governing bodies. We know that there are thousands of students for whom Antioch College is the right place. We need to capitalize on the momentum and publicity of the College Revival and help at least several hundred students find their way to an Antioch education in the coming year, and years to come.

Support Shared Governance
We call for a participatory decision-making process in the college’s tradition of community self-governance, in which decisions are not imposed from above, but are made through open public discussion, actively seeking the meaningful input from everyone affected who wishes participate. This will strengthen the community and renew the college’s reputation.

We are committed to advocating these positions to the Antioch University and College administrations, to the Antioch University Board of Trustees, and within the Alumni Association. We are committed to fighting for these positions as an independent collective dedicated to a vibrant, humane, self-governing and self-sustaining Antioch College.

In Solidarity
